Action research

From scientific insights to practical solutions

At Food Pioneers, action-oriented research is key. We do not stay in the realm of theory, but always work in close collaboration with practice. This way, new knowledge is applied directly in the region and insights lead to tangible results. Whether it is about short supply chains, innovative cultivation methods or a healthier urban food environment, each project makes a local difference and contributes to solutions with international relevance. You can read more about our target groups on the For whom page.

Food Pioneers team presents research on sustainable food systems in Almere.

From research to impact

European research projects

We are involved in multi-year European research projects on urban agriculture, short supply chains and urban food provision. In these, we work closely with:

  • Wageningen University & Research – scientific expertise on agriculture, nutrition and health

  • Aeres University of Applied Sciences Almere – practice-based research and student projects

  • AMS Institute – urban innovation and sustainable solutions for cities

We also collaborate structurally with the Municipality of Almere, the Province of Flevoland and local entrepreneurs.

Projects and examples

FOODCITYBOOST

In FOODCITYBOOST, we study the impact of urban agriculture on both the environment and society. This includes soil quality, CO₂ emissions, community cohesion and health. Almere functions as a Living Lab and model city for innovative urban agriculture.

Floating deltas

Within this consortium project, we explore how floating food production can contribute to climate-resilient cities. We test concepts for cultivation on water, spatial integration in delta cities and collaboration between governments, entrepreneurs and Food Labs.

Knowledge vouchers

For organisations with a concrete food-related question, we offer knowledge vouchers. These give access to applied research or training, ranging from product development to consumer research.

You can choose from:

  • Knowledge voucher – applied research up to €7,500 with 25% co-financing

  • Knowledge & Development voucher – research plus team development via SOL, a combined package of up to approx. €30,000

How it works:

  1. Submit your question to Food Pioneers.

  2. We match you with the right knowledge partner.

  3. You receive tailored research (and, if applicable, training) that helps accelerate your project.
